Work Hours: On-Call (8 – 16 hrs/wk), Non-Exempt
Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI) which was founded in 1973 has an amazing opportunity for the above position in the non-profit sector. To meet the needs of survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking, AACI Asian Women’s Home relies on a team of Shelter Support Staff to provide 24-hour coverage of the emergency shelter and crisis hotline. These staff are essential to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for shelter residents on weekends and weekdays/weeknights as needed. Staff also assists with in-person response, shelter operations, and general administration. This position reports to the Shelter Manager.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Answer the 24-hour hotline, providing crisis counseling and safety planning, information and referrals, and intake for shelter as needed.
- Assist new residents with intake and exit process, including completion of all paperwork.
- Provide residents with interpretation/translation and other supportive services as needed.
- Transport clients to and from the shelter and provide transportation as a part of client accompaniment or for daily needs.
- Document all services and activities.
- Provide in-person support as needed in response to law enforcement calls, client emergencies, etc.
- Support the shelter residents with activities of daily living, including crisis intervention and practical support.
- Promote residents’ understanding of communal living guidelines.
- Ensure that the shelter facility is kept clean and presentable and that the continuous confidentiality of the shelter location and residents is maintained at all times.
- Supervise and assist with meal planning, preparation, and clean up.
- Coordinate residents’ daily laundry and housekeeping tasks.
- Organize indoor and outdoor group activities for shelter residents, including families and children.
- Ensure that the staff office and storage areas are kept clean and organized.
- Assist shelter volunteers/interns with their orientation and task assignments including coordinating activities and events for shelter residents.
- Pick up and organize food bank and other donations, as needed.
- Assist with outreach as needed, including tabling events, presentations, and media activities.
- Assist the shelter coordinator with programmatic reports and other administrative requirements.
- Attend program and agency meetings and events as required.
- Performs other duties as may be required.
- BA/BS in social work, behavioral sciences, other related fields or equivalent experience. Experience with domestic violence and/or human trafficking issues preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Fluent and able to provide all services in an Asian language or Spanish preferred.
- Excellent customer service and client services philosophy in all interactions.
- Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks while also being a team player.
- Able to work in a flexible environment including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Must have already completed 40 hours of state-mandated domestic violence training.
- Sensitive and able to work with diverse communities in terms of race, ethnicity, class, sexual and gender orientations, age, disability, and other groups.
- Committed to program’s anti-violence mission and able to adhere to confidentiality requirements around client information.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications like Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Must have access to and be willing to use a private vehicle with up-to-date insurance and valid driver’s license.
