Fiber: What Is It and Why Is It So Important?
By helping you avoid constipation, stabilizing blood sugar, and lowering cholesterol, fiber is an essential part of maintaining a healthy diet.
What is Fiber?
Fiber is a carbohydrate that can be found mainly in plant foods like fruits, veggies, whole grains, and legumes. Unlike other nutrients, fiber can’t be broken down and absorbed in your body. There are two types of fiber:

Benefits of a High-Fiber Diet
Less chance of constipation
Healthy bowels
Lowers cholesterol levels
Improves blood sugar levels
Keeps you fill longer
Lowers your risk for certain chronic diseases
Adding Fiber to your Diet
Food
It’s important to add more fiber to our daily diets by eating nutritious food like fruits, veggies, whole grains, nuts/seeds, and legumes. Refined or processed foods are usually lower in fiber. Ex. white bread, pastas, and cereals that aren’t made with whole grains
Supplements
In general, eating nutritious foods are better than taking fiber supplements. Supplements don’t provide a variety of fiber, vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Your healthcare provider may recommend a fiber supplement if needed.
NOTE: Check with a healthcare professional before making major changes to your diet, especially if you have health conditions or specific symptoms.
