May and DJ’s lives are now filled with color because of AACI!
In 1987, May and her husband DJ immigrated from Taipei, Taiwan to the United States so their children could have better educational opportunities. Back then, life was busy with working, caring for the kids, and adjusting to a new country. But when the children grew up and careers ended, May realized something was missing.
After decades of raising three children and building a life in the United States, May found herself in a quiet chapter of retirement. In 2014, May decided she wanted to improve her English and stay active but didn’t know where to begin. Luckily, a friend told May about AACI Senior Wellness Program’s English classes. Curious and eager for connection, she decided to give it a try. That simple referral opened the door to a vibrant community. At AACI, May quickly became a regular. Although she started by only attending English classes, she eventually joined other activities like ping pong, art sessions, and Bingo-cise, a creative mix of bingo and exercise.
After seeing how much May had grown and benefited from her classes over the years, DJ finally chose to follow her lead and attend classes with her. DJ found joy in Tai Chi and English lessons, building confidence and friendships along the way. They both have a lot of fun when they come to AACI, saying
“When we come here [AACI] we can make new friends and also meet our old friends. Life is more colorful for us.”
The couple also benefits from AACI’s Senior Nutrition Program, which provides healthy meals in a social environment and eases the burden of grocery shopping.
When transportation became a challenge, AACI staff stepped in. Eunice, the Program Manager, helped them navigate the VTA system and even held an educational workshop to ensure they could continue attending programs. Eunice was a steadying force as they dealt with struggles. May said,
“Because I know I can ask someone for help and someone will really help me, I feel relieved and less stressed.”
Learning to use public transit gave them independence and peace of mind.
Today, AACI is woven into DJ and May’s lives. “Without AACI, we wouldn’t know what to do or where to go,” they admitted. Their story is a testament to the power of community and support. “I recommend my friends to come here [AACI] to enjoy the activities with me,” May said. AACI gives May and DJ a place to learn, laugh, and belong, where they do not have to feel limited to quiet retirement.
