Human Trafficking Crisis Support Advocate

Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI) which was founded in 1973 has an amazing opportunity for the above position in the non-profit sector. We do this by providing an array of high quality health and human services, sharing expertise about the Asian community’s needs and best services delivery practices, and providing Asian leadership in advocating on key health and human services issues. Position Summary:

Provide culturally competent and client-defined advocacy to shelter residents and non-residential survivors of human trafficking, with a focus on residential support and screening through the 24-hour crisis line. Performs community education to reach out to potential clients and raise awareness of trafficking issues. Attends collaborative meetings and builds relationships with community partners. Collects data and compiles reports for funders. This position reports to the Asian Women’s Home Shelter Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Peer Counseling:

  • Provides ongoing peer counseling for trafficked individuals and families.
  • This includes crisis counseling and safety planning, information and referrals, and intake for shelter as needed over the 24-hour crisis hotline.
  • Supports shelter residents with daily activities, including crisis intervention and practical support. Promotes residents’ understanding of communal living guidelines.

Case Management:

  • Provides survivors with advocacy, accompaniment, interpretation, and translation.
  • Works closely with community partners to coordinate services.
  • Issue areas include: civil, criminal, and immigration legal support; social services; transportation; job and housing search; and other supporting services as may be required by the survivor’s case management plan.
  • Transports clients as needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality of clients and the shelter at all times. Upholds a strengths-based framework of culturally competent, trauma-informed, survivor-centered care.

In-person Response:

  • Provides in-person support as needed in response to law enforcement calls, client emergencies, etc.

Community Outreach and Education:

  • Coordinates and conducts outreach to Asian communities regarding human trafficking and services for survivors.
  • Supports outreach and education efforts of the South Bay Coalition to End Human Trafficking.
  • This may also include production of multilingual collateral and response to media requests.
  • Ensures work is coordinated with the Program Lead, Volunteers and Outreach.

Data Management and Report Generation: 

  • Ensures services are recorded promptly and accurately.
  • Submits monthly reports to funders and responds to funder requests in a timely manner.
  • Coordinates work with the Data Management and Reporting Specialist.

Meetings:

  • Represents the needs of survivors to increase survivor safety and decrease further victimization by systems.
  • Builds relationships with community partners and facilitates joint advocacy efforts when appropriate.
  • Attends internal agency and program meetings and participates on program committees.

General Administration:

  • Assists with shelter operations, including intern/volunteer supervision, donation management, and resident activities.
  • Ensures the shelter is clean and presentable at all times.

Other Duties:

  • Responsible for other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in social work, behavioral sciences, other related fields or equivalent experience.
  • One year of professional experience in the human trafficking field, and one year of experience in a professional office environment, preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.  Practices non-violent communication.
  • Fluent and able to provide all services in an Asian language and English (Tagalog preferred).
  • Excellent customer service and client services philosophy in all interactions. Displays initiative and creativity.
  • Values teamwork while also being able to multitask and work independently.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to meet deadlines.
  • Able to work in a flexible environment including some evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must complete 40 hours of state-mandated domestic violence training.
  • Displays cultural humility and is able to work with diverse communities in terms of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, class, age, disability, and so on.
  • Committed to social justice and ending gender-based violence.
  • Demonstrates a high level of professionalism in dealing with confidential information.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications like Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Must have access to and be willing to use a private vehicle with up-to-date insurance and valid driver’s license.
