The 3waves Project Educates About Substance Use and Abuse

December 15, 2014

One of AACI’s new projects for substance use and abuse services is The 3waves of Santa Clara County Information Dissemination and Referral Program. This project is funded through a three year grant from the County of Santa Clara Department of Alcohol and Drug Services (DADS) to provide preventive services and educate community members about alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.

The program just released the first issue of its newspaper in mid-November 2014. The newspaper is being distributed quarterly at local libraries with hopes to distribute at other community locations such as grocery stores and schools. In order to broaden its reach, the newspaper is available in three languages – English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. The 3waves newspaper features different articles on the impact of alcohol and drugs through stories community members share about their own experiences or experiences with family members who have suffered from substance use or abuse. Other newspaper sections include information to bring awareness and education to certain groups, such as to prevent youth from engaging in substance use or to inform older adults who self-medicate how to get help. The project encourages community members to get involved by sharing their stories to help prevent and combat substance abuse. The newspaper also contains facts and tips on how to maintain general wellness through healthy practices.

In addition to the newspaper, AACI is launching a program website and a 3waves Resource Center at 749 Story Road, San Jose. The Resource Center is equipped with a computer and library, including brochures of local agencies and services for substance use and recovery, information on how to access other health care services, and other resources for community members and service professionals.  Another resource kiosk will be located at AACI’s Moorpark office to reach more community members seeking information. With both the newspaper and resource center, the 3waves Project aims to prevent substance use and abuse as well as assist the community in seeking the appropriate resources to help those struggling with substance use problems.
