BOOF Youth Win Two Awards
July 27, 2012
We are excited to announce that the high school participants of the AACI Center for Addiction Recovery & Empowerment (CARE) received two awards at the 3rd Annual Betting On Our Future (BOOF) Spotlight Festival in Anaheim, California. From June 18-20th, AACI had the opportunity to take a group of high school students from our BOOF youth prevention program to this youth-led conference where AACI was awarded the “2012 Best Original Screenplay” and “People’s Choice Award” for the Public Service Announcement (PSA) titled, “The Last Time”.
BOOF is a youth-driven problem gambling awareness campaign supported by CA Friday Night Live Partnership and the State Office of Problem Gambling. BOOF is a part of a statewide media campaign to communicate the risks, signs and consequences of problem gambling among youth through art and media. This year, AACI youth had the opportunity to showcase their youth-led media projects at the local, state and national level.
At the Spotlight Festival, the youth spent three days attending informative workshops, creating educational videos and building leadership skills in advocacy, media arts design, social media, team-building, strategic communications, and project management. AACI also collaborated with CA Friday Night Live Partnership to present the PSAs and media projects at the National Conference on Problem Gambling in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in July 2012 .
AACI youth participants also organized the 2nd Annual Youth-led Community Screening, which took place at the Tully Library Community Branch in East San Jose. This community screening provided an opportunity for our youth participants to raise awareness of problem gambling, to showcase their media projects, and to create a positive change in the local community.
AACI empowers youth to be advocates of change by raising awareness not only about the risks of problem gambling, but also by informing others about the local resources available. We are extremely proud of our youth for the recognition they have received for their educational media projects and are excited to see what is in store for them next year!
