New Spring Chickens Exercise Class Keeps Seniors Active!

Spring Chicken For many seniors, the average day is spent at home, alone. Their children and grandchildren are usually at work or school, and there is little to do. As a result of this isolated lifestyle, these seniors don’t get the exercise and social interaction they need to keep themselves physically and mentally healthy.

However, Thursday afternoons are quite different for the senior participants of AACI’s new “Spring Chickens” exercise program. Exercise instructor Trinh D. Nguyen has already had several questions about the day’s session.

“These seniors keep me on my toes, and they work me out!” Exercise instructor Trinh D. Nguyen exclaimed as he was getting ready to start class.

AACI’s “Spring Chickens” course is a chair-based fitness exercise program designed to improve the health of older adults through fitness and nutrition education. The “Spring Chickens” class is one of many courses offered by AACI’s Senior Wellness Program. The curriculum designed by Mr. Nguyen is meant to improve seniors’ strength, balance, flexibility, and cognitive abilities. These improvements contribute to older adults’ overall health and serve as a valuable prevention measure from falls and other potential accidents. Just as important are the social opportunities the class provides.

“Sometimes we get very lonely and staying at home is not a good idea,” said class participant Ms. Fang Hung Chuy Jui. “I would encourage everyone to come and make new friends. It’s a happy place and your health improves.”

Support Measure A this November!

Measure AHealthy Kids is one of our region’s most significant achievements and provides health insurance to all uninsured children that are not eligible for other public programs. Over the last ten years, Healthy Kids has improved school performance and improved overall health among children.

Unfortunately, funding for Healthy Kids is unraveling, and without Measure A, thousands of children will lose health insurance coverage.

Measure A is a $29/year parcel tax that will preserve Healthy Kids and ensure all eligible children in the county have access to health insurance and the preventative care they need. Measure A will be limited to ten years, include strict accountability measures, including annual financial reports. Funds cannot be used on administrative salaries.

How to get involved:
- Contribute to the campaign! Visit www.AVoteForKids.com
- Volunteer for the campaign! Contact Elaine Harris at (408) 607-7758

Don’t forget to Vote on November 2nd!
