AACI Honored for “Asian American Voices” Film at Inaugural CreaTiVe Awards
May 6, 2011
San Jose, CA – Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI) received this year’s CreaTiVe Award for its film, “Asian American Voices: Shaping Silicon Valley, Strengthening Community, Sharing Hope,” in the Non-Profit Social Services category. The award was presented to AACI and partner Story4 at the first annual CreaTiVe Awards Gala, which took place on January 8, 2011, at the San Jose Repertory Theatre. The event was presented by local community television station CreaTV San Jose, in honor of Silicon Valley videomakers.
“AACI is thrilled and honored to receive this award during the inaugural year of the CreaTiVe Awards. This recognition reflects the film’s success in portraying the experiences of Asian Americans in a way that connects with the greater community,” said Michele Lew, AACI President and CEO. AACI’s winning “Asian American Voices” film follows the stories of three local Asian American immigrants, capturing the challenges and successes they experience on the way toward shaping the community and building a life in Silicon Valley. The film also features a brief history of the struggles and contributions of Asian Americans in Silicon Valley.
“Asian American Voices” was produced as part of AACI’s Silicon Valley Asian American Voices project. This innovative project tells the stories of Asian American immigrants and uses these stories to engage, advocate, and educate people on issues impacting the community. The project pairs film with dialogue and multimedia tools to deepen understanding of the immigrant experience, build trust between diverse groups of people, and inspire action in support of immigrant communities. The film is now available on DVD and viewable online at www.AsianAmericanVoices.org. The project was made possible by a grant from Silicon Valley Community Foundation.
